Iceland Review

Activist group Saving Iceland claims that last night it closed down offices and institutions which they consider as "being accomplice to doing massive damage to nature".

"The companies and the institutions we closed down have all demonstrated a deliberate mens rea against Icelandic nature and will stop at nothing in their quest for easy profit and convenient agreements, even with companies with a despicable history. Therefore, closing them down was long overdue, so that further devastation could not take place," the group said in a statement.

CODY, Wyoming -- A Colorado man used a chain saw to fight off an apparently starving mountain lion that attacked him during a camping trip in northwestern Wyoming with his wife and two toddlers.

CORVALLIS, Ore. - A 700-mile security wall under construction along the United States' border with Mexico could significantly alter the movement and "connectivity" of wildlife, biologists say, and the animals' potential isolation is a threat.

However, technology and alterations to the design could dramatically improve the potential for animals to move more freely between the two countries, the scientists added. "Movement of pygmy owls from Mexico to Arizona may be necessary for the persistence of the Arizona population," Flesch pointed out.

This past holiday weekend was one of the busiest for Yosemite National Park. Visitors who braved the big crowds had to put up with more than just traffic and long lines, but smoke as well.

The smokey sight greeted tourists as they entered the gates to Yosemite; however many weren't aware that two fires were burning in the park over the weekend. The Grouse Fire has burned 2,300 acres and is 50% contained. The Harden Fire has charred 1,600 acres and is 75% contained.

I arrived at the South Mesa trail head near Boulder after work yesterday around 7:00 p.m., planning to run up the Mesa Trail for a while and then circle back down.

A runner who had just gotten back was looking in my direction, and eventually asked something like "Are you planning to run?" It turns out he was at the junction of Mesa and Shadow Canyon trails and was accosted by a couple of juvenile mountain lions.

None of us would do anything to hurt these gorgeous creatures, right? Don't you just want to hug them, and cuddle them, and scritch them, and kitchey-kitchey-koo them?

That is my first instinct. And my first instinct would get them killed. And worse still, may get a small child killed. A mountain lion is safer if it is wary and afraid of humans and safest if it avoids proximity to humans. And humans, especially small humans are way safer if mountain lions keep their distance.

Pumas, are also known as cougars or mountain lions, depending on different regions. It is the second biggest cat in the Western Hemisphere, only the jaguar is bigger.

Technically the puma is classified as a Small Cat, rather than a Big Cat! It is classified as a Small Cat as it can purr - in cannot roar - it lacks the specialized larynx and hyoid apparatus of Panthera.
