A 10-year-old girl is listed in good condition at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh after being bitten by a mountain lion in Columbiana County

It didn't happen at any zoo, or out in the wild -- but at a local home where, as a hobby, a family keeps several full-sized lions and mountain lions caged up in their yard.

As a business owner, tax payer, elected official, independent thinker and someone who can read AND use Google, I admit that I am VERY skeptical when the government warns me about anything.

Government often causes more problems than they solve, and it's in their own best interests (power, taxes, job security, etc.) to have a crisis du jour to keep people alarmed, afraid and looking for a government solution. Anyone remember Alar? DDT? Acid Rain, Ozone Hole? Coffee? The list is long because fearful people are much more malleable. Liberals, aka Marxists, statists, socialists, communists, progressives, democrats crave control over every aspect of your life, so they must find new ways to create fear and dissension amongst the people to further their insatiable lust for power and their devious, subversive efforts to enrich themselves and control you (think convenient liar Spotted Al Gore).

We've been following with interest a small yarn developing in Moraga involving the possible sighting of a cougar cub struck by a car and killed off St. Mary's Road between Carter and Stafford Drive.

Contra Costa County Animal Control says an officer was dispatched (observed by the EastBayDaze) but that no carcass could be located. It was reported to animal control as a possible domestic housecat.

SONORA -- A mass e-mail warning of reservation problems at Yosemite National Park left the U.S. park besieged with telephone calls, an official says.

Kenny Karst, public relations manager for Delaware North Cos. Parks & Resorts at Yosemite, said nearly 3,300 people with summer reservations at the national park received an e-mail saying an October landslide was threatening their plans, the Sacramento (Calif.) Bee said Thursday.

Dr. Thomas Cowan on how the A1 - A2 factor explains why even raw milk sometimes does not seem to be enough of an improvement over "store-bought"

"I have been involved in thinking about the medicinal aspects of cow's milk virtually my entire career. As one four-year-old child pointed out to me many years ago, "Mommy, I know why he always talks about milk, his name is Cow-an." So, I guess this milk "obsession" is no surprise. The obsession started in earnest about 25 years ago when I read the book The Milk of Human Kindness Is Not Pasteurized by maverick physician William Campbell Douglass, MD. This was one of the most influential books I have ever read...

A rural Hermosa resident somehow stayed calm enough to grab his camera after spotting this mountain lion outside his home.

I imagine most people would have been in shock after seeing such a huge lion so close to home. Barb Roseland sent us this photo after seeing our March newsletter, which featured a quiz on mountain lions.

SPEARFISH - Information from this year's hunting season on mountain lions will be used by state game officials to make a recommendation for next year's season to the Game, Fish and Parks Commission.

This year's season lasted 45 days and ended when a sub-quota of 15 female lions was reached. Hunters also killed 11 male lions in the Black Hills. The GF&P uses the lions killed during the season as part of its research.

WASHINGTON -- A land management bill that swept through the U.S. Senate last month and is headed for a House vote this week punishes rock collectors and paleontologists with arrest and expropriation of their cars and other equipment...

In the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, a "forfeiture" provision would let the government confiscate "all vehicles and equipment of any person" who digs up or removes a rock or a bone from federal land that meets the bill's broad definition of "paleontological resource," says a report by Jon Berlau of the Competitive Enterprise Institute.
