TUCSON, AZ -- State gaming officials say they have captured a wild jaguar in the Arizona desert, and it's a first for them.

The animal was captured Wednesday during a research study monitoring habitat for mountain lions and black bears near Tucson. The captured jaguar was fitted with a satellite tracking collar and then released, according to Lambert.

Mountain lions are the topic of the next Pescadero Conservation Alliance Natural History Lecture Series event on Saturday: "Cougars of the Santa Cruz Mountains."

A tracking hike with a predator-prey theme is set from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A lecture follows at 1:30 p.m. The day will cover lion biology, the history of mountain lions and people in California, personal safety in mountain lion country, and current research in the Santa Cruz mountains.

Santa Paula -- Officials are warning residents in one local community to be on the lookout for mountain lions after two reported sightings.

The Department of Fish and Game believe there are two full sized female mountain lions in the area as well a juvenile mountain lion, and two cubs.

TELLURIDE - Two extraordinary athletes with disabilities are partnering on a climb that gives the fittest enthusiasts chills.

Erik Weihenmayer, who lost his sight at age 13, and Chad Jukes, an Iraq war veteran who lost his right leg to an explosive device in 2007, will climb the frozen Bridal Veil Falls today, Feb. 12. The falls, at 365 feet, is Colorado's tallest free falling waterfall and one of the most difficult ice climbs in the country.

The jaguar Panthera onca has become an animal in danger of extinction over recent decades, due to the fragmentation and deterioration of its habitat, as well as hunting and illegal animal smuggling.

As a result of this vulnerability, no individuals have been seen in the centre of Mexico since the start of the 20th Century. However, Mexican and Spanish scientists have now managed to photograph a male jaguar in this region.

A news report this morning featured a small boy, 21/2 years old, who apparently wandered away from his rural family home in South Texas last night, apparently following the family dog.

It took me back to a time when I was about 4. It was probably November, sunny but cool, and I was wearing a red sweater with a shirt and jeans. Predators came down the mountains at this time of year to search for snacks in the desert. Coyotes. Mountain lions. Wolves?

A mountain lion was recorded on a home surveillance system yesterday, well within city limits in San Mateo, Ca.

That's the fourth sighting in two weeks. Now the authorities cannot deny the animals are here but they are still denying the real danger to smaller people, children and pets.

Project manager Antti Rautiainen of the City of Helsinki, the capital's "rabbit terminator", has suggested new methods to cull the ever-expanding population of wild bunnies in the city and environs.

Rautiainen has been engaged in the rabbit extermination campaign for the past couple of months. In the course of that period, the rabbit population has been reduced by some 400 individuals. The wild rabbit population has proved to be a nuisance ever since the pet animals escaped or were abandoned.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says a Scottsbluff police officer shot a mountain lion that had wandered into a neighborhood.

Conservation officer Scott Brandt says the 70-pound female cat was seen in a tree near Scottsbluff High School on Sunday morning. When she came down from the tree, the police officer shot her, causing critical injuries.
