Hoax and ensuing crash on Wall Street show the new dangers of our light-speed media world.

A hacked Twitter account of a major news organization Tuesday dispelled any lingering notion that tweets are mere 140-character missives that harmlessly fly off into the ether. The FBI and the Securities and Exchange Commission are investigating the security breach that momentarily sent stocks into free fall Tuesday, erasing some $200 billion from the market's value.

From his home in Downey, Calif., the then-19-year-old high school dropout controlled thousands of compromised PCs, or "bots," that helped him earn enough cash in 2004 and 2005 to drive a souped-up 1993 BMW and spend $600 a week on new clothes and car part

But Ancheta got caught. In the first case of its kind, he pleaded guilty in January to federal charges of hijacking hundreds of thousands of computers and selling access to others to spread spam and launch Web attacks. In separate cases, federal authorities last August also assisted in the arrest of Farid Essebar, 18, of Morocco, and last month indicted Christopher Maxwell, 19, of Vacaville, Calif., on suspicion of similar activities. The arrests underscore an ominous shift in the struggle to keep the Internet secure: Cybercrime undergirded by networks of bots â€" PCs infected with malicious software that allows them to be controlled by an attacker â€" is soaring.

For the first time, researchers have raised the possibility of RFID tags being infected by viruses and worms.

In a paper being presented today at the Pervasive Computing and Communications Conference in Pisa, Italy, sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (IEEE), a group of computer scientists show just how susceptible radio-frequency tags may be to malware. "Up until now, everyone working on RFID technology has tacitly assumed that the mere act of scanning an RFID tag cannot modify backend software, and certainly not in a malicious way," the paper's authors write. "Unfortunately, they are wrong."

The massive data collection taking place at over 50 companies that we know of so far including Google, Yahoo, Facebook and all the other internet household names, was nothing new to anyone paying attention.

From my personal knowledge, the collection of internet data and emails has been going on since at least 1997. I became aware that year when touring our ISP's colocation facility. The person who worked for the ISP told us point blank "that's the NSA room over there" and that "they were collecting email, web site visit URLs and the like directly from the incoming and outgoing traffic". Our jaws hit the floor when we realized what he had said. The scope of this spying predates 9/11 by years and it covers the entire internet, so you can't say it started with that event. It started from the beginning of the internet and today the public is shocked at the scope of this operation; it's worldwide and impacts everyone who has ever used the internet.

General Alexander lied about how NSA surveillance is being used, and he's been caught in public

The NSA recently attempted to justify its mass surveillance programs by claiming that its secret taps had foiled 54 terrorist plots. Except that's not true. And General Alexander (the same psycho that built a surveillance "command center" to spy on Americans, and designed it to look like the bridge of the Enterprise from Star Trek) has been caught out lying about the whole thing. And Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont), current chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, is none too pleased.

I have spent the last few years working on Facebook, neglecting my own work, I'm ashamed to admit. Facebook finally banned me, and I am very glad they did, because otherwise I might never have left.

I am totally against censorship. Do you want to know what I did to get banned? I posted this meme and they took it down, so I posted it again. Normally, after posting the second time they would leave it be, but not this time. They removed it again. So, I put it back up and I was banned from Facebook. All my content, all my uploads and all discussion and posts I've made over the last decade to Facebook were removed.

The Tulsa Police Department asks that area residents be mindful of Valentine's Day-related e-mail viruses next month.

Police said the e-mail message usually reads "Greeting Card sent for Valentine's Day" to the targeted user. The virus file names include "youanme.exe," "onlyyou.exe," and "meandyou.exe," according to police.

The non-partisan liberty movement often finds itself frustrated with Hollywood celebrities who railed against injustices under former President George W Bush, but who remain silent when similar abuses are carried out by a Democratic administration.

The red team versus blue team mentality in America tends to make it difficult for issue-oriented activists to move the ball on efforts to restore civil liberties and a sensible foreign policy to the nation. This is exacerbated when pop culture icons unflinchingly back Democrats no matter how offensive their policies become. Politically progressive movie star Matt Damon was once an ardent supporter of President Obama. However, whether or not one might agree with his stances on all the issues, he can no longer be counted among the hypocrites who apply double standards based on party affiliation. Matt Damon recently told BET that the President "broke up" with him over issues like drone strikes and the National Security Agency's spying scandal. Let's dish on Damon's concerns, TMZ-style.

Since Edward Snowden blew the whistle on the NSA's mass surveillance of Americans, interest in cryptography has been piqued.

That's fine if you're a nerd, but what about Grandma's privacy? Luckily there are fairly simple ways to communicate privately. Just be warned, if you use encryption, the NSA has reportedly decided it can hold on to your data indefinitely, whether you're American or not.
