Limited disclosure, part of transparency deal made last month, shows tech giants turn over data from tens of thousands of accounts

Tens of thousands of accounts associated with customers of Microsoft, Google, Facebook and Yahoo have their data turned over to US government authorities every six months as the result of secret court orders, the tech giants disclosed for the first time on Monday. As part of a transparency deal reached last week with the Justice Department, four of the tech firms that participate in the National Security Agency's Prism effort, which collects largely overseas internet communications, released more information about the volume of data the US demands they provide than they have ever previously been permitted to disclose. But the terms of the deal prevent the companies from itemising the collection, beyond bands of thousands of data requests served on them by a secret surveillance court. The companies must also delay by six months disclosing information on the most recent requests - terms the Justice Department negotiated to end a transparency lawsuit before the so-called Fisa court that was brought by the companies.

A leader of the US congressional insurrection against the National Security Agency's bulk surveillance programs has accused his colleagues of withholding a key document from the House of Representatives before a critical surveillance vote. Justin Amash, the Michigan Republican whose effort to defund the NSA's mass phone-records collection exposed deep congressional discomfort with domestic spying, said the House intelligence committee never allowed legislators outside the panel to see a 2011 document that described the surveillance in vague terms.

The surveillance experts at the National Security Agency won't tell two powerful United States Senators how many Americans have had their communications picked up by the agency as part of its sweeping new counterterrorism powers.

The reason: it would violate your privacy to say so. That claim comes in a short letter sent Monday to civil libertarian Senators Ron Wyden and Mark Udall. The two members of the Senate's intelligence oversight committee asked the NSA a simple question last month: under the broad powers granted in 2008's expansion of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, how many persons inside the United States have been spied upon by the NSA? The query bounced around the intelligence bureaucracy until it reached I. Charles McCullough, the Inspector General of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the nominal head of the 16 U.S. spy agencies. In a letter acquired by Danger Room, McCullough told the senators that the NSA inspector general "and NSA leadership agreed that an IG review of the sort suggested would itself violate the privacy of U.S. persons," McCullough wrote.

One of the Incsub team was very upset yesterday to discover that his WordPress site had been hacked. Somehow, a brand new WordPress install had been set up within his WordPress installation.

We received an email today from a WordPress user who wanted to alert us to a jQuery hack. At first, I've got to admit, I was a little bit sceptical but I thought it was worth looking in to. I was surprised by what I found.

We all love jQuery - sometimes I like to daydream about marrying it in some sort of exotic ceremony in Barbados. In fact, it's so awesome that it's become a little bit ubiquitous. There are so many plugins using jQuery that we're totally used to finding it in them. Normally a WordPress plugin will get jQuery from just a few places...

National Security Agency officers on several occasions have channeled their agency's enormous eavesdropping power to spy on love interests, U.S. officials said.

The practice isn't frequent - one official estimated a handful of cases in the last decade - but it's common enough to garner its own spycraft label: LOVEINT. Spy agencies often refer to their various types of intelligence collection with the suffix of "INT," such as "SIGINT" for collecting signals intelligence, or communications; and "HUMINT" for human intelligence, or spying. The "LOVEINT" examples constitute most episodes of willful misconduct by NSA employees, officials said.
