Macintosh security consulting firm SecureMac.com on Tuesday issued a critical warning for an unpatched Java security vulnerability in Apple's Mac OS X.

According to the man credited with discovering it, Landon Fuller, the Java flaw even affects the latest version of Mac OS X, 10.5.7, released just a week ago. Fuller has gone so far as to release a proof of concept for the security hole. The vulnerability could be used to perform what SecureMac refers to as "drive-by-downloads," or the ability to infect a computer by simply visiting a Web page. Fuller explains that the flaw allows malicious code to run commands with the permissions of the current user.

It's happened, my faith in FireFox and plug-ins has been totally shattered, for real this time. I knew the day would come soon...but I'm still sad.

I read this brilliantly simple blog post where Duarte Silva, on his myf00 blog, basically trojaned a legitimate Mozilla "extension" (add-on) to make it do evil, evil things. He calls his creation "ffspy", how fitting given that it steals your HTTP POSTs. The scary thing about this - that legitimate extension was NoScript.

Bloggers are increasingly getting sued or threatened with legal action for everything from defamation to invasion of privacy to copyright infringement.

The number of blogger lawsuits is likely to keep rising as the number of people who post online continues to grow, says Sandra Baron, executive director of the Media Law Resource Center and a media-law attorney. Social-networking sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook and MySpace -- which is owned by News Corp., the parent company of The Wall Street Journal -- and microblogging services like Twitter are making it easy for impetuous remarks to reach thousands of users in a matter of minutes.

When I read about a security researcher who had published proof-of-concept code for a vulnerability, I was upset. To disseminate proof-of-concept code is to basically say, "Here is a way to attack computers..."

Apple gives people the false impression that they don't have to worry about security if they use a Mac. And perhaps because the company is invested in fostering that impression, Apple is grossly negligent in fixing problems.

Google might be sending you to infected sites thanks to Gumblar-virus that travels through infected adobe documents.

Once on your computer, it targets your Google searches and redirects them to malicious sites. Once that happens, the hacker gets complete control of your computer.

If only the RIAA could understand that they could benefit from P2P, if they only would try, instead of fighting it, which can never succeed. Technology always wins.

I'm not even convinced that she is guilty, by the way. You know why? Because for many years I did "tech support" for my family and for an office I worked in. And I saw how easy it was for weird things to happen to a Windows computer that the owner didn't even know about. There are, they say, millions of computers owned by bots for malicious purposes, after all. She says she didn't do it. What if she really didn't? How would she prove it? How would *you*, if it were you?

Why hit one OS with malware when you can hit two? That is the question. The situation is this: The Twitter account of well-known venture capitalist Guy Kawasaki was hacked and used to send out tweets luring users to a site hosting malware.

According to Trend Micro, the malware changes the DNS settings of Windows and Mac machines. If Mac users attempt to view the promised pornographic video on the site, they will download a malicious file.
