Americans increasingly worry that the scope of anti-terror programs has endangered civil liberties, yet still narrowly approve of the government's efforts.

Americans believe that government surveillance programs collect far more information than even the widely reported recent leaks of classified data indicate and they increasingly worry that the scope of anti-terror programs has endangered civil liberties. And yet, despite those concerns, Americans still narrowly approve of the "government's collection of telephone and Internet data as part of anti-terrorism efforts," with 50% approving and 44% disapproving, according to a newly released Pew Research Center survey. A key to understanding the public's seemingly ambivalent attitudes is that among those who believe the programs go beyond their official descriptions, feature excessive secrecy or don't receive enough oversight by courts, a significant minority nonetheless approves of them. Those who believe the programs perform as advertised support them overwhelmingly.

For the first time in almost a decade, the majority of Americans are more concerned about the government infringing on their civil liberties than about a potential terrorist attack, according to a new poll by Pew Research.

US citizens have traditionally responded to similar polls by saying the government has not yet gone far enough to protect the country from threats. But new results from Pew Research Center reveal that public opinion has drastically shifted - especially in the wake of NSA spying programs leaked by Edward Snowden nearly two months ago. Pew reported that "a majority of Americans - 56 per cent - say that federal courts fail to provide adequate limits on telephone and internet data [which] the government is collecting as part of its anti-terrorism efforts." An even larger percentage - 70 per cent - believes the government uses the data for "purposes other than investigating terrorism." Another 63 per cent believe "the government is also gathering information about the content of communications."

Last week I had the privilege of being in Washington DC to talk to a number of distinguished members of Congress along with top leadership from The Whitehouse to urge them to reject two pieces of legislation which would be detrimental to the Internet.

The two bills (Stop Online Piracy Act in the House of Representatives and Protect IP Act in the Senate) have a noble goal, reducing online piracy. Unfortunately, these bills come at a terrible price - they will force the creation of a "great firewall of America" used to censor websites that are hosted outside of the US and they will burden Internet companies with liability and litigation that will force new jobs and businesses to be created overseas.

I have always been amused at people talking about the death of the antivirus industry. It has supposedly been dying for decades and it is still around and growing.

What amuses me even more is how people can sound so knowledgeable about how antivirus works and why it is doomed to fail. What is especially amusing is precisely how they get all their facts wrong. I was busy reading about GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) based super-computers and its uses when I came across an interesting paper on how to use a GPU to speed up antivirus software. So I read it and had my un-epiphany.

Today's release of Flash Player contains a new background updater. This new background updater will allow Windows users to choose an automatic update option for future Flash Player updates.

If you read this September 2011 CSIS report, then you saw that 99.8 percent of malware installs through exploit kits are targeting out-of-date software installations. This point was reiterated recently in volume 11 of the Microsoft Security Intelligent Report. Also, attackers have been taking advantage of users trying to manually search for Flash Player updates by buying ads on search engines pretending to be legitimate Flash Player download sites. Improving the update process is probably the single most important challenge we can tackle for our customers at this time.

Today we received reports of attempted SSL man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks against Google users, whereby someone tried to get between them and encrypted Google services.

The people affected were primarily located in Iran. The attacker used a fraudulent SSL certificate issued by DigiNotar, a root certificate authority that should not issue certificates for Google (and has since revoked it). Google Chrome users were protected from this attack because Chrome was able to detect the fraudulent certificate.

The attack begins with a message that comes from a spoofed "Bank of America" sender (such as: RiskDept@hotmail.com, or RiskDept@msn.com).

The attached file, BillingVerification.exe, is a self-extracting archive which contains and automatically loads an html page in the recipient's browser. The file saved on the local drive is:

Amidst my usual adventure with Android malware analysis, I saw this snippet of code while skimming through a particular sample's class modules.

Late last year, I was looking deeper into Portable Network Graphics (PNG) image format, especially about the fields that hold textual information. Upon seeing the code, it immediately triggered my suspicion as to why would the application need to check for the existence of the "tEXt" chunk of a PNG file...
