What is there not to like about two-factor identification?

The government (FISMA), banks (PCI) and the healthcare industry are huge proponents of two-factor authentication, a security measure that requires two different kinds of evidence that you are who you say you are ... or that you should have access to what you're trying to access. In many cases, it involves using a combination of a physical device and a secure password, so those huge industries were early adopters of the practice. In our definition, two-factor authentication is providing "something you know, and something you have." When you're talking about national security, money or people's lives, you don't want someone with "password" as their password to unwittingly share his or her access to reams valuable information.

If you are using the Social Media Widget plugin (social-media-widget), make sure to remove it immediately from your website.

We discovered it is being used to inject spam into websites and it has also been removed from the WordPress Plugin repository. This is a very popular plugin with more than 900,000 downloads. It has the potential to impact a lot of websites.

There are many ways to inject a malicious payload onto a website. The attacker can modify any of the web files (index.php for example), the .htaccess file or php.ini (if the site is using PHP).

There are other ways, but those are the most common methods, specially on shared hosts. However, for the last year, we started to see a new way to inject malware on compromised servers via a malicious Apache module. We posted about it before and it has been covered on many other mediums. After a few months of tracking them, and working on multiple servers that had this issue, we want to share a bit of what we have learned.

At this point it's unclear of the severity, as WordPress.com has not released anything public, but I would say the odds are not in their favor.

The Hacker News (THN) put out an article this morning titled: 15000 WordPress Blogs Hacked For making Money From Survey. Naturally my first reaction was, meh, it's likely a fluke of some kind, but as I read it I became more suspicious. It all started with this email...

California has entered the fray to stop unconstitutional NSA spying. On Monday, Sen. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) and Sen. Joel Anderson (R-San Diego) introduced the Fourth Amendment Protection Act to prohibit any state support of the NSA.

"State-funded public resources should not be going toward aiding the NSA or any other federal agency from indiscriminate spying on its own citizens and gathering electronic or metadata that violates the Fourth Amendment," Lieu said. Based on model legislation drafted by the OffNow coalition, SB828 prohibits the state of California and its subdivisions from "Providing material support, participation or assistance in any form to a federal agency that claims the power, by virtue of any federal law, rule, regulation or order, to collect electronic data or metadata of any person pursuant to any action not based on a warrant that particularly describes the person, place and thing to be searched or seized." It also bars any state funding to the NSA or any entity supporting it in the state.

The worm introduced to Twitter this weekend was similar to the famous Samy worm which spread across the popular MySpace social-networking site a while back.

Twitter asserts that no passwords, phone numbers, or other sensitive information was compromised as part of the attacks, but the attackers were able to continue a series of bombardments across 3 days.

I want to warn you guys about a massive exploit that has hit a large number of Godaddy Hosted WordPress Blogs this weekend

This hack appears to redirect visitors upon arrival from Google and attempts to install malware on their computers. When I was visiting the site directly, whether logged in or as an Admin, even if I could see the malicious script in my view-source window I did not have any issues and it did not redirect me. This means your site could be hacked and infected and you may be unaware.

A Security Advisory (APSA12-01) has been posted in regards to the misuse of an Adobe code signing certificate.

Adobe, working with Verisign, plans to revoke the certificate on October 4, 2012 for all software code signed after July 10, 2012. Adobe is in the process of issuing updates for all affected products using a new digital certificate.

We recently received two malicious utilities that appeared to be digitally signed using a valid Adobe code signing certificate.

The discovery of these utilities was isolated to a single source. As soon as we verified the signatures, we immediately decommissioned the existing Adobe code signing infrastructure and initiated a forensics investigation to determine how these signatures were created. We have identified a compromised build server with access to the Adobe code signing infrastructure. We are proceeding with plans to revoke the certificate and publish updates for existing Adobe software signed using the impacted certificate. This only affects the Adobe software signed with the impacted certificate that runs on the Windows platform and three Adobe AIR applications* that run on both Windows and Macintosh. The revocation does not impact any other Adobe software for Macintosh or other platforms.

Today we are excited to announce our plan to move to a rapid release cycle for Flash Player releases starting with Flash Player 11.5. This will allow us to deliver more frequent updates to our labs beta community.

Using the background update mechanism in Flash Player, beta releases will be installed seamlessly to our nearly 1.1 million beta users and we encourage you to subscribe if you have not already. Beta users will have access to new features earlier in the release cycle to use, test, and provide feedback. Due to this change we will consolidate our private and public beta programs into a single public beta program so we can bring the world's best runtime to our beta users' fingertips.
