People identifying themselves as activists in the Anonymous hacker movement said Wednesday it wasn't technical prowess but police infiltration that yielded 25 arrests in a sweep in Europe and South America.

In conversations in an online chat room where Spanish-speaking activists in the Americas and Spain regularly gather, they said nearly all of those arrested had been active on a single website used by the group. Among those detained were a Spaniard known by the online nickname "Pacotron" or "Thunder," according to Spanish police and a communique issued by Anonymous Iberoamerica, which said he lives in Malaga.

Hacking group Anonymous was in a giving mood over the holiday weekend, using stolen credit card information from security research website Stratfor Global Intelligence Service to make donations to charities like the American Red Cross.

In a post on Pastebin, Anonymous spokesman Barrett Brown says the goal of the attack was to obtain the emails on its servers. On Saturday, hackers claiming to be a part of Anonymous crashed the Stratfor website and infiltrated its client list, emails and credit card information to apparently steal $1 million in donations for charity. According to a report by the New York Times, hackers posted a list online that contains its confidential client list as well as credit card details, passwords and home addresses for about 4,000 clients. Hackers claim to have details on more than 90,000 credit card accounts, and obtained about 3.3 million emails from Stratfor's servers.

Anonymous has hacked the U.S. Federal Reserve, and released login credentials and personal information belonging to 4,000 American banking executives. The action is part of the ongoing campaign to reform computer crime law, known as Operation Last Resort.

According to reports, Anonymous leaked the partial internet login credentials and personal information such as addresses and phone numbers belonging to over 4,000 American banking executives on Sunday, Jan.3. The information was leaked via Pastebin and a randomly chosen government website with low security, the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center. Operation Last Resort (#OpLastResort) is part of a concerted effort to force the U.S. government to reform computer crime law in the wake of Aaron Swartz's death. Aaron Swartz, a brilliant technologist and Internet freedom fighter, was laid to rest last month after committing suicide. In honor of Aaron and other Internet freedom fighters, Anonymous launched Operation Last Resort.

Anyone can say they're part of Anonymous. It's the perfect cover for hackers with motives more sinister than fun and propaganda.

Could that be why private intelligence firm Stratfor was just hacked? The Operation AntiSec collaborators Anonymous and LulzSec dominated media coverage of online security through 2011, taking credit for hacks of Sony, AT&T, the UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency and News International newspapers - even though the more serious cybercriminals continued working on the money-spinners. The Stratfor hack looks like all the others. It was announced via Twitter accounts associated with Anonymous. Samples of the pilfered data were posted online as evidence. The hackers taunted the victim about its pathetic defences. And the data vandalism was dressed up as political action.

Greetings Californian State Senator Dianne Feinstein. We are Anonymous. Did you think that your actions against the citizens of this country would go unnoticed?

Did you think that we the people, would not respond to your gruesome dishonesty? We have been watching. In accordance with phase II of #Op NSA we have found you, Senator Feinstein, GUILTY Of supporting unconstitutional acts carried out by the Government and its agencies. Although the opinion of the FISA court that oversees the National Security Agency's operations is often not released to the public, we are now making it known to the public. While the public may have been kept in the dark; you, Senator Feinstein were fully aware of the FISA court's two thousand and eleven opinion. Eighty pages detailing how the National Security Agency's surveillance conduct is in direct violation of the fourth amendment of the United States Constitution as well as in excess of the limitations imposed by the statute: The FISA amendments act of two thousand and eight. When you told the American people that you have no knowledge of the National Security Agency's surveillance program, PRISM, of violating anyone's civil liberties or freedoms: You were lying.

Here's a new maxim for politicians, policy makers and public administrators: curtail, censor or otherwise limit communications technology in the real-world - expect online reprisals.

Hacker collective Anonymous released a "press release" on Saturday announcing OpBritian, a reaction to UK Prime Minister David Cameron's suggestions that social media should be restricted in a time of crisis. And while Anonymous states that actions by rioters were "violent", they have no love for police authority, and so the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Hacker group Anonymous released 1.7GB of data belonging to the US Department of Justice on Monday, according to several reports.

According to Reuters, the breached server operates the Bureau of Justice Statistics' website, and contains information that helps the bureau collect and analyze data about crime, including cybersecurity statistics. This news comes a week after the government of Utah fired its state technology director after a data breach that exposed personal information of about 780,000 people, including about 280,000 Social Security numbers. This reaction could inform consequences for other government employees when a data breach occurs. It also brings up the issue of responsibility when a breach occurs. A recent study by CloudPassage finds that while one-third of IT professionals rely on their provider to secure their servers, this isn't always the case.

China was struggling Thursday to restore several government websites that international hacking group Anonymous says it attacked in an apparent protest against Chinese Internet restrictions.

On a Twitter account established in late March, Anonymous China listed the websites it says it hacked over the last several days. They include government bureaus in several Chinese cities, including in Chengdu, a provincial capital in southwest China.
