DDoS mitigation service provider Prolexic announced on Thursday that it has created a new department, the Prolexic Security Engineering and Response Team, which will provide clients with detailed pre- and post-attack data as a subscription service.

Prolexic says the PLXSERT group was formed as an internal piece of the organization in February of 2011, and has been providing select clients with forensic data since then, based on the company's insight into global DDoS threats and attack patters, as well as information on specific client attacks. "Feedback from clients has been so positive that the service is now being made available on a subscription basis to all Prolexic clients," says the company, in the press release announcing the new service.

Paul Mutton of Netcraft reports that 4Chan first went down on Sunday, posting an update to its Blogger-hosted status page.

"Site down due to a large DDoS attack," read the notice. "We hope to have it back up soon." On Tuesday, the board's operators identified the attack as a UDP packet flood on Port 80, in a notice that was later amended to identify the attack as a TCP SYN flood. According to Mutton, 4Chan was used to recruit volunteers (to a kind of voluntary botnet) when the group Anonymous first began using DDoS attacks as a punitive tool against companies that withdrew services from the whistle-blowing site WikiLeaks in the wake of its release of a series of secret US diplomatic cables in late 2010 - a list that includes Visa, MasterCard, PayPal and others.

Registries offering the soon-to-be launched adult-focused .xxx top-level domain began the land rush period on Tuesday.

The .xxx domain was a long time in development, facing opposition from adult industry proponents who expressed concern that their business and their websites could be "ghettoized" by the domain, and that the existence of a .xxx domain in the first place - with the rules that accompany it - implicitly suggest that the online adult industry was not capable of policing itself.
