Facial recognition technology is a hot topic and this recently caught my attention: German authorities have suggested that Facebook's "facial recognition" feature is illegal.

The legal keyword appears to be "biometrics". Another keyword appears to be "stored" (though... Deutsche Welle's article also states that no data can be "collected" without consent). Collected or stored biometric data, which is it? Is on the fly facial recognition analysis legal if the data isn't retained or stored after it's used?

The "viral civil unrest" has been spreading for several days now, and reportedly, RIM's BlackBerry Messager (BBM) is one of the viral components would-be anarchists have used to organize themselves.

As a result, RIM made a public statement that it would assist the UK authorities. And what happened next was rather predictable (at least to us). TeaMp0isoN, a hacktivist group targeted The Official BlackBerry Blog.

Perhaps you've heard the news? JailbreakMe 3.0 went live yesterday.

What's JailbreakMe? It's an easy way to jailbreak an Apple iOS device using a PDF (related) vulnerability. It's done with a "drive-by" style exploit. All somebody needs to jailbreak their (newer) iPad/iPhone/iPod is to visit jailbreakme.com and to touch the free/install button.

March 2010: my Google Profile was "not yet eligible" to be "featured" in Google's search results. My profile was private and Google was attempting to get me to make it public.

I thought that was a clever use of reverse psychology, so I took a screenshot and posted it to Twitpic. Today I read that Google will be deleting all private profiles after July 31. This is related to Google+ migration.

Yesterday's post made note of a spammer that has figured out a way to embed his Cost Per Action (CPA) surveys into a Facebook application at apps.facebook.com.

An observant reader called Matthew wrote to inform us of a phishing attack that uses the very same technique. The phisher's form fits seamlessly into facebook.com...

We've (re)discovered an interesting new run of Facebook CPA survey spam.

It uses this subject line: This girl killed herself after her dad posted a secret of her on her fb wall . The spammer used this template two weeks ago and it then linked to a webpage hosted at thedominio.info.

Rumors and news regarding hacker group LulzSec have been afloat on Twitter today.

The rumors circle around this Pastebin post which claims that LulzSec had acquired the UK's 2011 census data. Note that anybody can post to pastebin.com. Soon after, news came that Scotland Yard has arrested a 19-year-old in Essex. Should be interesting to see what comes next...

Richard O'Dwyer was in the news this weekend. He's a 23-year-old from the UK that is facing extradition to the USA over tvshack.net, a website which was seized by the US government due to claims of copyright infringement.

O'Dwyer has the same lawyer as Gary McKinnon, who allegedly hacked into United States military and NASA computers back in 2001. McKinnon has been diagnosed with a form of autism and of having a precarious state of mental health. His mother has claimed he's suicidal and would not survive US prison.

Our Threat Research team analyzed a Bitcoin wallet.dat trojan today. Bitcoin is a digital currency created in 2009.

Here's the GUI. It's not very professional looking. But that's not the real point. This is a snatch and grab. Before the window is rendered, the application will fetch the Bitcoin wallet.dat file (if it exists) from this location...

Has Facebook shut its doors to spam?

But there's always a new mouse to challenge the cat. This particular CPA spam has been circulating for several days now.
