The surge in mobile computing popularity is opening new doors for malicious attacks. Since it is a relatively new area, some of us are not aware of the risk awaiting and are not really sure of how to protect ourselves.

Some applications may have access to your data or personal information. Be wary of the access that is outside of the scope or purpose of the applications. For example, a game application that has the access to SMS (read, write and send), calling, phonebook entries, and system files should trigger your suspicion for why it requires such access. If you have any doubt about an application, do not install it.

Facebook chat messages containing malicious links are being sent from compromised Facebook accounts. The messages are typically sent to all of the compromised user's friends.

The Facebook chat messages include text such as "hahahah foto" and the phony Facebook application pages are also photo-related such as "cytepic" and "artephotos".

We detected a direct targeted attack that resulted in an exploit of several SourceForge.net servers, and have proactively shut down a handful of developer centric services to safeguard data and protect the majority of our services.

The problem was initially discovered on the servers that host CVS but our analysis indicates that several other machines were involved, and while we believe we've determined the extent of the attack, we are verifying all of our other services and data. As a short term response, we've taken down the following services to prevent any possible escalation...

A Utah military facility that tests chemical and biological weapons was opened Thursday after a nearly 12-hour lockdown that officials said was prompted by a missing vial of "nerve agent."

"On January 26, during a routine inventory of sensitive material in the chemical laboratory, Dugway officials discovered a discrepancy between the records and the agent on hand," said a statement issued by the U.S. Army's Dugway Proving Ground. "As a precaution, the commander immediately locked down the installation and began efforts to identify the cause of the discrepancy."

People have been warning for years about the impending doom relating to internet-connected devices. Viruses coming to a fridge near you! There could be a trojan horse in your fancy new automobile! Oh, the terror!

And on one hand they're right. Anything which connects to the network from within your environment is a porthole to the outside world, and you need to make sure it is protected. On the other hand, up to a certain point in time, this sort of attack was way too difficult and not worth the return-on-investment for malware writers. But things have changed.

On December 22, 2010, we received several reports that a new malware attack has infected WordPress sites hosted at GoDaddy and possibly other hosting providers.

The worst part about this virus is it's much harder to clean. The malicious hackers have stepped it up a notch and decided to infect the WordPress database and not just server files. The above script is injected inside every single page and posts inside the database (wp_posts table). This malicious script redirects website visitors to various sites hosting "Fake AV" websites and some are zero-day attacks. A zero-day attack means that anti-virus programs may not yet have their definitions updated and your computer can become infected even with up-to-date software.

ASCII art uses cleverly arranged standard keyboard characters as well as extended character sets to create pictures or messages in a kind-of low-resolution graphic.

Spammers have used this technique in the past to evade content-based anti-spam filters - the jumble of characters that is used is simply not detected as spam. This newer version includes a clickable link (previous generations simply spelled out the name of the advertised website).

You are infected with a trojan. It allows a botmaster to send commands to control your computer.

Your zombie computer is pooled with other zombies to form a botnet. There may be up to 100,000 other zombies in the botnet. The botnet is rented out to the fraudsters.

Some savvy kids know exactly what they are partaking in and love the thrill of it. Some kids think they are doing "work from home" for lucrative pay.

Often, the parents seem to be the last to know. If you are not sure what a DDoS attack does to someone's website, I love the description provided by Graham Cluley at Sophos. He says to think of "15 fat men trying to get through a revolving door at the same time". Got an image?
