Verizon Joins Cybersecurity Group

Communications company Verizon has joined the Lockheed Martin Cyber Security Alliance to counter cyberthreats to U.S. information technology infrastructure.

The alliance, composed of leading companies in the security industry brings together cybersecurity capabilities and technologies in a collaborative effort. "With its use of technology, broad industry knowledge and solid portfolio of cybersecurity solutions, we are pleased to welcome Verizon to the Lockheed Martin Cyber Security Alliance," said Curt Aubley, vice president and chief technology officer of Lockheed's NexGen Cyber Innovation and Technology Center.

Verizon released a report on Wednesday that indicates 2011 was the year of the hacktivist.

According to the Data Breach Investigations Report, though only three percent of all external attacks were carried out by activist groups, they stole over 100 million records, which is almost double the amount taken by financially-motivated hackers. Hacktivism on part of high profile groups like Anonymous and LulzSec made headlines throughout 2011, including attacks against Sony, and multiple security, military, and government websites. At least one web hosting provider, Freedom Hosting, was targeted by Anonymous for allegedly hosting child pornography sites.

One week ago, it wasn't yet clear if Microsoft would be able to quickly patch Internet Explorer's latest vulnerability.

Microsoft Security Advisory (2794220) We now know it isn't part of January's Security Updates. This raises the possibility of an out-of-cycle patch. But then, we have yet to see more than limited exploitation. (We are currently investigating reports of targeted attacks.)

We recently came across a ransom trojan that prompts with "Windows license locked!"

The trojan claims that "you should complete activation" and provides several phones numbers.

On Monday, we released our Mobile Threat Report for Q1, and in that report we mention there's a growing number of mobile trojans that "deliver on their promises". What do we mean by that?

Well, in the past, mobile malware often offered something such as "free" mobile web services as bait, but then, during installation, the trojan would display some kind of decoy error message. At that point the folks installing the trojan would typically search for answers, either because they were suspicious or because they were troubleshooting. That would then lead to actual answers on forums that what they had in fact installed was a trojan. These days, when even non-nerds have smartphones, the bait is quite a bit different.

Without a complete understanding of the methodology of viruses you are at significant risk when you "think" you are safe.

Do not engage in "promiscuous" activity. "Trust" is real - every site you visit, every file you download, and every application you install places files on your computer. If you visit a site of "questionable" nature - anything and everything on the site should be considered untrustworthy.

A virus has swept across social networking site Facebook that sends malicious software into a user's computer, potentially stealing personal information such as addresses and telephone numbers.

The "Koobface" virus, which originally appeared last year but has returned in a new format, hides itself in links to videos supposedly sent from profiles of users' friends on the site. The new version creates a fake YouTube page when the link is opened...

Virus:W32/Ramnit is no stranger to many malware analysts/researchers, as it was in the wild back in 2010.

One of the interesting techniques is the injection method that Ramnit uses. This differs from the traditional method, in which a virus would create a suspended thread and inject code using a memory writing Windows API function, then resume the suspended thread after the injection is done.
