Google's Android mobile operating system has an open Marketplace much like the iTunes AppStore. This week approximately 40 "banking" applications sold through the Marketplace were removed due to security concerns.

Since the applications were not developed or authorised by the banks themselves, they could not do real online banking from the Android device. Apparently they only opened the web interface of the online bank for the user. On the other hand, they could have stolen user credentials.

A Russian software tool mimics online flirting and can be used to steal personal information from would-be dates, according to PC Tools.

Those entering online dating forums risk having more than their hearts stolen. A program that can mimic online flirtation and then extract personal information from its unsuspecting conversation partners is making the rounds in Russian chat forums, according to security software firm PC Tools. The artificial intelligence of CyberLover's automated chats is good enough that victims have a tough time distinguishing the "bot" from a real potential suitor, PC Tools said. The software can work quickly too, establishing up to 10 relationships in 30 minutes, PC Tools said. It compiles a report on every person it meets complete with name, contact information, and photos.

I want to warn you guys about a massive exploit that has hit a large number of Godaddy Hosted WordPress Blogs this weekend

This hack appears to redirect visitors upon arrival from Google and attempts to install malware on their computers. When I was visiting the site directly, whether logged in or as an Admin, even if I could see the malicious script in my view-source window I did not have any issues and it did not redirect me. This means your site could be hacked and infected and you may be unaware.

We have already established that Healthcare.gov is not a functioning database application that allows people to shop for competing health plans.

It is actually a government-run Trojan Horse that suckers people into creating accounts where they hand over: • Name and address • Email address and password • Social security number • Private bank account details • Employer details and other information During the enrollment process, your computer also hands over your IP address which is then tied to your social security number. This IP address is then handed over to the NSA...

A number of web security companies have recently reported a dramatic increase in attacks on WordPress sites. Approximately 30,000 sites have been infected at last count, with most being based in the U.S.

The goal of the attacks seems to be to distribute rogue antivirus software. According to web security company Websense, "The injection hijacks visitors to the compromised sites and redirects them to rogue AV sites that attempt to trick them into downloading and installing a Trojan onto their computer."

FISA Amendments Act and warrant-less spying are moving through the House and Senate, and would allow NSA to continue spying on the American citizen.

Yesterday, the House of Representatives voted to renew the dangerous FISA Amendment Act-which hands the NSA broad, warrantless surveillance powers over Americans' international communications-for another five years. Sadly, the House refused to add any new oversight powers or privacy protections, despite ample evidence the NSA has used it to unconstitutionally spy on Americans. In fact, Rep. Lamar Smith, the bill's co-sponsor, would not even allow any amendments to come up for a vote.

The next time Facebook sends you an email about a friend tagging you in a new picture, be cautious - it could be a trap.

A new strain of malware identified by security firm Sophos as Troj/Agent-XNN has been circulating the social networking site, encouraging members to view photos as an attachment. After clicking on the infected link - which is disguised as a Facebook notification email - a ZIP file containing malware allows hackers to gain control over Windows-operated computers. Although Facebook email notifications typically tell you which friends tagged you in a picture, this malware campaign states "one of your friends added a new photo with you to the album."

I got such a chuckle out of this message I had to share it.

There is a whole new field opening up of how to handle people's online presence after death (for example this Mashable post), however I would bet that sending the type of message below isn't considered one of the acceptable methods.

For years libertarians have been saying that the encroachment of government on the lives and liberties of Americans is reaching a point of no return, and for this we have been disdained as alarmists, "conspiracy theorists," tin-foil hat-wearers of the worst sort. Tyranny in America? Impossible! cried smug liberals and equally complacent conservatives (and a minuscule minority of fake "libertarians"): this is not only "extremism," they said, but also downright subversive. The danger, they implied, came not from government overreach but from "anti-government extremists" who had to be closely watched by law enforcement. The Snowden revelations have confirmed that, if anything, the warnings by libertarians and others radically understated the problem and the imminence of the danger to the Constitution. For our warnings were nearly always expressed in the future tense, as a dire possibility should present trends continue. The exposure of the NSA's vast spying apparatus - constructed, "legalized," and maintained in secret by the US government - has shown that the danger is now. As that magnificent curmudgeon of the Old Right, journalist and author Garet Garrett, put it: "There are those who still think they are holding the pass against a revolution that may be coming up the road. But they are gazing in the wrong direction. The revolution is behind them. It went by in the Night of Depression, singing songs to freedom."

The tools for safe cyber-living exist. We need to feel they're relevant to us

It has been a fragile week for cyber-security, with system breaches affecting a quarter-of-a-million Twitter accounts coming on the heels of online assaults against both the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, apparently by highly sophisticated Chinese hackers. Given the vulnerability of these high-profile targets, ordinary users might be forgiven for feeling any residual digital euphoria replaced by growing unease. What does it mean to be secure in an online realm where few people understand anything of the frantic combat taking place around them?
