Is open source development slowly being eroded by misguided plugin designers?

As some of you may know, I spend a lot of time looking at plugins. In fact, I cast my eye over every single new plugin release on WordPress.org, and test any that I feel may of worth. So I end up testing a lot of plugins. The ones that I like get featured here at WPMU. You never read about the countless plugins I test that don't make the grade. Unless of course I need to vent about something (which I do today), in which case, plugins that I don't recommend get free publicity.

The National Vulnerability Database lists 400 WordPress security vulnerabilities. Let's set the record straight.

Trust me: It's not as bad as it sounds. Searching the National Vulnerability Database using keyword "WordPress" blasts you with 400 listed vulnerabilities! I've seen this number quoted recently when comparing WordPress to other content management systems, and it puts WordPress security in a negative light. Never fear! We can agree that publicizing your wp-admin login credentials for all to see is a bad idea, right? Dumb question?

Well, if you're not logging into your WordPress Dashboard via HTTPS (or option #2, below), that's exactly what you're doing. Hackers can spoof your login form, "listen" to the site activity, or your coffee house neighbor could be using Firesheep on you. In case you didn't know, bad people suck. If someone snags your login credentials, they could wreak havoc that can make you cry. It's scarier than just losing all your files. They might change your site content from family-friendly to R-rated, get your Dropbox or Amazon S3 credentials, install some nasty stuff, or change your account password and profile email to lock you out (your password reset link would email them, not you).

Infected WordPress Sites Connected to Trojans on Approx. 700,000 Macs

According to security software firm Kapersky, the recent Apple Mac Flashback Trojan that made such a splash in the news recently can most likely trace its roots back to infected WordPress sites.

Alexander Gostev from the Kaspersky Lab Global Research and Analysis Team explains how compromised WordPress sites were used to infect Macs, "From September 2011 to February 2012, Flashfake was distributed using social engineering only: visitors to various websites were asked to download a fake Adobe Flash Player update. It meant the Trojan was being distributed as installation archives named 'FlashPlayer-11-macos.pkg,' 'AdobeFlashUpdate.pkg,' etc." According to Gostev, in March 2012 approximately 700,000 computers worldwide were infected with the Trojan.

A number of web security companies have recently reported a dramatic increase in attacks on WordPress sites. Approximately 30,000 sites have been infected at last count, with most being based in the U.S.

The goal of the attacks seems to be to distribute rogue antivirus software. According to web security company Websense, "The injection hijacks visitors to the compromised sites and redirects them to rogue AV sites that attempt to trick them into downloading and installing a Trojan onto their computer."

If you open up your WordPress site to user registrations, then sooner or later you are bound to run into registration spam.

Of course there are a number of captcha plugins out there. But spam tools are getting better and better at solving captchas. Because of that, there have been a proliferation of more "manual" captcha tools, those that do things such as requiring the user to identify an animal or drag an image into place. These can work well if they work well, but unfortunately some simply don't.
