We have reason to believe that Bitly account credentials have been compromised; specifically, users' email addresses, encrypted passwords, API keys and OAuth tokens.

We have no indication at this time that any accounts have been accessed without permission. We have taken steps to ensure the security of all accounts, including disconnecting all users' Facebook and Twitter accounts. All users can safely reconnect these accounts at their next login. We are recommending all Bitly users make these changes. Please take the following steps to secure your account: change your API key and OAuth token, reset your password, and reconnect your Facebook and Twitter accounts.

A new threat intelligence system will help corporate and government security officials share information to fight cyberattacks, U.S. researchers say.

Scientists at Georgia Tech say their malware intelligence system will be vital as threats expand into new domains and increasingly focus on industrial espionage. Dubbed Titan, the system will anchor a security community creating "safety in numbers," as companies large and small add their threat data to a knowledge base that will be shared with all participants, a Georgia Tech release said Wednesday.

Rent-to-own giant Aaron's is being sued in Georgia and California for allegedly spying on customers, court papers say.

The lawsuits allege that Aaron's franchises installed software on laptops and computers it rented to help it recover equipment that might not be returned. But customers say they were unaware the software existed and that it also allowed the company to steal private information, including passwords, credit card numbers, social security numbers and personal documents, including, at times, intimate photographs.

The Chicago Board of Elections has confirmed that the personal information of 1,200 people who applied to work Election Day was inadvertently exposed online.

Board spokesman James Allen said a mistake allowed a database containing applicants' names, addresses, driver license numbers and the last four digits of social security numbers to be accessed, the Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday. A computer security firm called Forensicon uncovered the breach while researching voting patterns on the website of the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners. The firm reported that the personal information of up to 1.7 million registered voters had been exposed.

Some of the largest U.S. financial institutions are "actively under attack" from hackers, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said.

"Right now, financial institutions are actively under attack. We know that. I'm not giving you any classified information," Napolitano said Wednesday during a cybersecurity event sponsored by The Washington Post. "I will say this has involved some of our nation's largest institutions." Stock exchanges also have been subject to cyberattacks during the last few years so officials know "there are vulnerabilities," she said.

The United States is becoming increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks that could dismantle the nation's power grid or more, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said.

Panetta, during a speech at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York Thursday, said his response was to increased aggressiveness and technological advances by America' adversaries, identified as China, Russia, Iran and militant groups, The New York Times reported. "An aggressor nation or extremist group could use these kinds of cyber tools to gain control of critical switches," Panetta said. "They could derail passenger trains, or even more dangerous, derail passenger trains loaded with lethal chemicals. They could contaminate the water supply in major cities, or shut down the power grid across large parts of the country."

California-based Mozilla says it pulled its latest version of its Firefox Web browser just a day after its release because of a critical security vulnerability.

"Mozilla is aware of a security vulnerability in the current release version of Firefox (version 16). Firefox version 15 is unaffected," Michael Coates, Mozilla's director of security assurance, said Wednesday in a post on the company's security blog. The bug was apparently overlooked by Mozilla while it was developing the new version or may have inadvertently been introduced by the fixes for earlier problem incorporation in the version 16 upgrade that started reaching users early Tuesday, Computerworld reported. The fixes were to patch 24 vulnerabilities in the earlier version.

The White House confirmed that it had been the victim of a cyberattack, but said no harm had been done.

On Sunday, conservative website the Washington Free Beacon said the White House Military Office's computer system was attacked by Chinese hackers, Politico reported. A White House official said later Sunday there was an attempt to hack the computer system, but it only affected an unclassified network and there was no evidence any data had been stolen. None of the White House's secure classified computer systems was affected, said an official.

Cybersecurity experts say the U.S. Congress and the courts need to clarify what private firms can and cannot do to protect themselves from computer hackers.

The new approach would focus on reducing vulnerable areas in a company's digital security rather than actively deterring attackers, The Washington Post reported Monday. The private sector needs to know who's targeting their computer networks and the ability to aggressively defend themselves, said Steven Chabinsky, who stepped down this month as the FBI's top cyber lawyer. To do that, he said, businesses need a better relationship with law enforcement and the courts.
