US combs through half a billion of German phone calls, emails and text messages on a monthly basis and has classified its European ally on the same target level as China, a German news magazine revealed.

The NSA document leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden and published by Der Spiegel classified Germany as a "third-class" partner, on the same level as China, Iraq and Saudi Arabia, meaning that the US surveillance in Germany was stronger than in any other EU country. "We can attack the signals of most foreign third-class partners, and we do it too," the document states.

The NSA has a "brand new" technology that enables one billion cell phone calls to be redirected into its data hoards, according to the Guardian's Glen Greenwald, who told a Chicago conference that a new leak of Snowden's documents was 'coming soon.'

Calling it part of a "globalized system to destroy all privacy," and the enduring creation of a climate of fear, Greenwald outlined the capabilities of the NSA to store every single call while having "the capability to listen to them at any time," while speaking via Skype to the Socialism Conference in Chicago, on Friday. Greenwald was the first journalist to leak Snowden's documents, having travelled to Hong Kong to review them prior to exposure. "What we're really talking about here is a globalized system that prevents any form of electronic communication from taking place without its being stored and monitored by the National Security Agency," he said.

Many in the United States are at odds over the National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower, Edward Snowden, and this includes the country's celebrities.

Wanda Sykes, a stand-up comedienne, made her own opinions on Snowden very clear Friday night on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. When asked what she think she happen to Snowden, Sykes stated, "They should get him back here, try him, and he rots in a jail." Sykes told Leno how she had previously worked for the NSA herself and had top security clearance. "I believe Snowden, he got a GED, I believe," Sykes said. "I got a college degree, Jay, and you like, 'oh, it's the same thing as Snowden' what the hell?" General Educational Development (GED) are a group of tests to certify the taker has high school-level education skills.

US lawmakers have been trying for the past two years to pass new bills that would set up information sharing programs between tech companies and the government.

But those bills, including the controversial Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), look like they will be spending even more time in legislative limbo. Bloomberg news reports today that House and Senate lawmakers are holding back on introducing their own versions of CISPA or similar cyber information sharing legislation till at least this fall, due primarily to the public outcry following the revelations of the NSA's secret internet spying program PRISM and its surveillance of millions of personal phone records. The revelations of the NSA's surveillance programs, which occurred in early June through leaked documents published in the Guardian, "probably couldn't have come at a worse time," for Senate cyber bill prospects, as Congressman Mike McCaul (R-TX) told Bloomberg.

President Obama said "nobody is listening to your telephone calls," even though the National Security Agency could actually track you from cellphone metadata.

Well, the latest from the Edward Snowden leaks shows that Obama eventually told the NSA to stop collecting your email communications in 2011, apparently because the so-called StellarWind program "was not yielding much value," even when collected in bulk. But how much could the NSA learn from all that email metadata, really? And was it more invasive than phone data collection? The agency is well beyond its one trillionth metadata record, after all, so they must have gotten pretty good at this. To offer a basic sense of how StellarWind collection worked - and how much user names and IP addresses can tell a spy about a person, even if he's not reading the contents of your email - we took a look at the raw source code of an everyday email header...

The NSA has to collect the metadata from all of our phone calls because terrorists, right? And the spy agency absolutely must intercept Skypes you conduct with folks out-of-state, or else terrorism.

It must sift through your iCloud data and Facebook status updates too, because Al Qaeda. Terrorists are everywhere, they are legion, they are dangerous, and, unfortunately, they don't really do any of the stuff described above. Even though the still-growing surveillance state that sprung up in the wake of 9/11 was enacted almost entirely to "fight terrorism," reports show that the modes of communication that agencies like the NSA are targeting are scarcely used by terrorists at all.

It's believed NSA leaker Edward Snowden is now in Moscow after leaving Hong Kong over the weekend. He was thought to be heading to Cuba, but he never boarded that flight. It was reported Sunday that Snowden would ultimately seek asylum in Ecuador.

Now many are worried that Snowden is spilling harmful national security secrets to Russia and China. Martha MacCallum and Judge Andrew Napolitano went over the legal ramifications for Snowden in the event that he is apprehended and brought back to the United States to face espionage charges. Napolitano said he believes that Snowden is acting at this point solely to avoid prosecution in the United States, not to damage U.S. national security by giving classified intelligence to Russia and China.

US government has been hacking Chinese mobile operator networks to intercept millions of text messages, as well as the operator of region's fibre optic cable network, South China Morning Post writes citing Edward Snowden.

More information on National Security Agency activity in China and Hong Kong has been revealed by SCMP on Sunday, shedding light on statements Snowden made in an interview on June 12. "The NSA does all kinds of things like hack Chinese cell phone companies to steal all of your SMS data," Snowden was quoted as saying on the SCMP's website. In a series of reports the paper claims Snowden has provided proof of extensive US hacking activity in the region.

We may have more to fear from spies acting out of patriotic zeal than those acting out of power lust or economic interest.

You need not suspect the motives of those responsible for NSA surveillance to detest what they are doing. In fact, we may have more to fear from spies acting out of patriotic zeal than those acting out of power lust or economic interest: Zealots are more likely to eschew restraints that might compromise their righteous cause. For the sake of argument, we may assume that from President Obama on down, government officials sincerely believe that gathering Americans' telephone and Internet data is vital to the people's security. Does that make government spying okay? No, it doesn't.
