by Acting On Just These Ten Steps

May 2, 2013

My site was recently hacked and I learned a great amount from the ordeal. In this article I distill my experience down into 10 key WordPress security steps.

For two days the site was either complete offline or in a rather mangled state. For two days my hosting provider and I worked our asses off to get LWB back online. It was an experience that I would rather not go through again, and one that I hope you will never have to go through. With that in mind, in this post I want to outline the comprehensive steps I have taken to make my site more secure. I have spoken to some of the most influential and respected web security guys out there over the past couple of weeks and have been able to distill their wisdom into this post. It is my hope that you will take action on these steps to make your WordPress website(s) far more secure.

A new virus has been cataloged, and it appears to be planting and distributing child pornography files. Hackers? No. The government is planting child porn on your computer, or so an alert published today indicates.

Before It's News has interviewed a person, who spoke on condition of anonymity, that has been a victim of the virus implantation. The person was engaged in journalistic exposure of political corruption, and suddenly police appeared on his doorstep with a search warrant specifying a search for evidence of possessing and distributing child pornography. The story is a bit convoluted here, but basically the gentleman did a little more investigation and found rogue .exe files on his computer that appeared as normal emule sharing directories but contained "hundreds to thousands" of child pornography files. The potential whistleblower claims the virus was deliberately planted on his computer in order to stop his activity. The article surmises the Internet Crimes Against Children task force may be behind the virus planting, though why is unclear.

A recent report by Citizen Lab uncovered that commercial spyware produced by Gamma International is designed to trick people into thinking it's Mozilla Firefox.

We've sent Gamma a cease and desist letter today demanding that these illegal practices stop immediately. As an open source project trusted by hundreds of millions of people around the world, defending Mozilla's trademarks from this type of abuse is vital to our brand, our users and the continued success of our mission. Mozilla has a longstanding history of protecting users online and was named the Most Trusted Internet Company for Privacy in 2012 by the Ponemon Institute. We cannot abide a software company using our name to disguise online surveillance tools that can be - and in several cases actually have been - used by Gamma's customers to violate citizens' human rights and online privacy.

It was only hours ago that Eric Schmidt had said that all apps to be used on the Glass would need an approval by Google.

However, Jay Freeman, a renowned hacked has jailbroken the device successfully and this news has spread like jungle fire in the tech world. It is to be noted that Cydia, the app store for jailbroken iPhones and iPads is being run by Freeman and he had purchased a set of the Glass as a developer. Hoax and ensuing crash on Wall Street show the new dangers of our light-speed media world.

A hacked Twitter account of a major news organization Tuesday dispelled any lingering notion that tweets are mere 140-character missives that harmlessly fly off into the ether. The FBI and the Securities and Exchange Commission are investigating the security breach that momentarily sent stocks into free fall Tuesday, erasing some $200 billion from the market's value.

A few days after Oracle released its critical patch for Java, and CVE-2013-2423 is already being exploited. Upon checking the history, the exploitation seems to have begun on April 21st and is still actively happening.

If you use Chrome, you shouldn't have to work hard to know what Chrome extensions you have installed and enabled.

That's why last December we announced that Chrome (version 25 and beyond) would disable silent extension installation by default. In addition to protecting users from unauthorized installations, these measures resulted in noticeable performance improvements in Chrome and improved user experience. To further safeguard you while browsing the web, we recently added new measures to protect you and your computer. These measures will identify software that violates Chrome's standard mechanisms for deploying extensions, flagging such binaries as malware.

Two new updates are available for Mac users that aim to increase security and control over how the Java web plugin runs in the Safari web browser.

Named as Java for OS X 2013-003 and Safari 6.0.4 (or Safari 5.1.9 for older versions of OS X), the updates are available right now through Software Update via the  Apple menu. The updates combine to roughly 110MB and requires Safari be quit before installing, though a reboot is not necessary, and should be considered must-have upgrades to existing software for those who use Safari and/or Java on the Mac.

The words are written in crayon, in the haphazard bumpiness of a child's scrawl. "I am willing to give up some of my constitutional rights in order to be safer or more secure."

They're the words that Florida father Aaron Harvey was stunned to find his fourth-grade son had written, after a lesson in school about the Constitution. Harvey's son attends Cedar Hills Elementary in Jacksonville, Fla. Back in January, a local attorney came in to teach the students about the Bill of Rights. But after the attorney left, fourth-grade teacher Cheryl Sabb dictated the sentence to part of the class and had them copy it down, he said.

Imagine the kind of havoc a malicious hacker could cause if he or she were able to take over an airplane simply using his Android phone.

With a tap of his or her fingers, the hacker could arbitrarily control the plane remotely and redirect its path. If you think this is only something that could happen in a Hollywood movie, think again, because that's exactly the scenario a German security researcher laid out on Wednesday at a conference in Amsterdam. Hugo Teso, a security researcher for the German IT consultancy firm N.Runs - he is a trained commercial pilot as well - explained at the Hack in the Box security conference that a protocol used to transmit data to commercial airplanes can be hacked, turning the hacker into a full-fledged hijacker.
